THE HISTORY OF THE PLACE

THE HISTORY OF A UNIQUE PLACE

In the 17thème century, King Louis XIV completed the conquest of Franche-Comté by taking Besançon. He then entrusted Vauban with the construction of the Citadel and the entire ramparts. During the construction period, Vauban often stayed in Besançon and more particularly booked a room at the « Du Sauvage » inn, which was very famous at the time.

The “Du Sauvage” renaissance pays tribute to the presence of Vauban in Besançon and to the inscription of his work on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The place was occupied since the Middle Ages by the convent of the Minimes. It was then seized during the Revolution and its park sold in 1792. A mansion was built at the beginning of the 19thème century. The Poor Clare Sisters settled there in 1854 and had a chapel built by the architect DUCAT in 1890.

Today, and for more than ten years now, the establishment is managed by Véronique and Philippe Mathieu.
